También conocidos como “Carpas Koi“, son unos peces muy populares y los protagonistas nipones absolutos en la gran mayorÃa de estanques del paÃs.
El nombre koi es una abreviatura de la palabra japonesa nishikigoi, nishiki, que significa ‘algo de hermosos colores’, y goi, que es el nombre que se le aplica en Japón a las carpas en general.
La leyenda dice que los peces que conseguÃan nadar rÃo arriba, hasta la cascada y subirla, al conseguirlo, como recompensa por su esfuerzo, se transformaban en dragones, por eso dicen que las carpas Koi se parecen tanto a los dragones.
Hacia 1840 la crÃa de koi era una actividad popular entre la alta sociedad japonesa, convirtiéndose en un sÃmbolo de estatus social.
En 1914 se despertó el interés nacional por los Koi, cuando el emperador Hirohito introdujo a estos peces en su estanque del Palacio Imperial.
